Avoid False Alarms With Your Commercial Security System

By Mark Mahaffey

If you have ever had to deal with a false alarm from your commercial security system, then you know how frustrating it can be! Not only can it cause the police to have to come to your business for no reason, but you may also end up with a hefty bill to pay!

One of the causes for false alarms is that your workers may not know how to work the system correctly. If they try to operate it and make a mistake, it can cause it to trip, which will cause your call center to be notified. The solution is to make sure that all your employees have been properly trained and know exactly how to work the system.

Some commercial security systems have motion detectors connected. If your system has these, they could cause a false alarm. If there is clutter or other small objects in the area of the detectors, these could get kicked or blown into the path of the monitored area. When this happens, the motion detectors may be tripped, causing a false alarm.

Since most systems have sensors on doors and windows, the seals need to be kept in good condition. If a door seal is bad, it may not shut correctly, or it may open just a bit in a gust of wind. If this happens the system can easily get triggered resulting in a false alarm. Be sure to have these seals checked frequently.

Your fire system can also be a source of a false alarm. If the smoke detectors, heat sensors or automatic sprinkler systems malfunction, it can cause the system to go off. Make sure to keep good batteries in the detectors and have your service company check your sprinkler system often.

When you have a commercial security system, false alarms can be a big hassle. Prevent these from happening by making sure your workers know how to operate it and that your system is in good working order.
